Task 1: A cruise line has 3-day, 4-day, and 7-day cruises. After each cruise, a ship returns for one day and then leaves again. If all 3 ships leave on January 1, on what days during the next two years will all 3 ships leave on the same day. *Neither year is a leap year! Generalize a pattern for cruises that are x, y and z days long? Explain your pattern in words.

Task 3: Read Chapter 1 in My Kids Can. Read the article on children's understanding of division. Write a Posterous blog (2 paragraphs only) responding to students' understanding of multiplication and division. Cite examples from either Chapter 1 or the article. Possible prompts: How does having students act out or discuss tasks help them understand whether they are multiplying or dividing? How did the process of writing story problems support students' understanding? |
