Multiplication and Division Errors

In this module you will:

1) Complete a task involving multiplication and division concepts.
2) Examine multiplication and division errors
3) Read about how some local teachers have addressed the concept of division
4) Consider the process of writing an instructional objective

Task 1:
A cruise line has 3-day, 4-day, and 7-day cruises. After each cruise, a ship returns for one day and then leaves again.

If all 3 ships leave on January 1, on what days during the next two years will all 3 ships leave on the same day. *Neither year is a leap year!

Generalize a pattern for cruises that are x, y and z days long? Explain your pattern in words.

Task 2:

Password for both files- 5301

Here are some multiplication and division errors. Can you find their problem? How would you address it?

Here are some ideas about how to help the students.

Your mid-term exam will cover this content!

Task 3:
Read Chapter 1 in My Kids Can.

Read the article on children's understanding of division.

Write a Posterous blog (2 paragraphs only) responding to students' understanding of multiplication and division. Cite examples from either Chapter 1 or the article.

Possible prompts:
How does having students act out or discuss tasks help them understand whether they are multiplying or dividing?

How did the process of writing story problems support students' understanding?

Task 4:
Here is some information on objective writing.

Consider either the Train Task or the Cruise Task.
Write a 3-part objective in which that task were the part in which you were evaluating students. You will put one of the two objectives that you write for practice on the course webpage
.

Task 2: Work will be covered on the mid-term.

Task 3: Posterous blog

Task 4: Put on of your two objectives that you wrote for practice on the course wiki. Make sure you sign in!
