Sample Itinerary

The following is a sample itinerary for the Summer Institute.  It is probable that the actual itinerary for 2008 will be slightly different from the 2007 itinerary. There may be changes in the order of events.  

This itinerary of under construction (it is being updated for 2008)

Day 1 (Tuesday)
Leave Charlotte

Day 2 (Wednesday)
Arrival at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam 
Transport from the airport to the hotel 
Introduction to the program
Lunch 
Visit to the Anne Frank House 
Boat trip through the canals of Amsterdam 
Welcome dinner 
Free time in Amsterdam 

Day 3 (Thursday)
Breakfast at the hotel
Visit to a school in Amsterdam 
Lunch 
Visit to the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum   
Free time in Amsterdam 
Options:  Stedelijk Museum, Heineken Museum, shopping, or exploration 
Dinner on your own 

Day 4 (Friday)
Breakfast and check out of the hotel
Travel to Rotterdam or The Hague
Visit to schools   
Trip to eastern Netherlands (Rotterdam or The Hague or
         Scheveningen
)   
Free time and lunch on your own 
Dinner in Breda      
Travel to Maastricht
Check-in at Bergere Hotel

Breakfast at the hotel
Class session - Introduction to Dutch education
Walking tour of Maastricht  
Lunch
Free time in Maastricht
Dinner on your own

Day 6 (Sunday)
Breakfast at the hotel
Class session
Coach trip to Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands   
Visit to American Cemeteries at Margraten and Henri Chapele    
Visit to the "drielandenpunt," the point where three countries meet 
Visit to Monschau in Germany   
Return to the hotel, dinner on your own

Day 7 (Monday)
Breakfast at the hotel
Class session
Visit to schools in Aachen 
Visit to Aachen - lunch in Aachen
Walking tour of Aachen
Free time and dinner on your own
Return to Maastricht
Free time and dinner on your own

Day 8 (Tuesday)
Breakfast at hotel
Class session
School visits in the Netherlands
Lunch at Maastricht University
Boat trip on the river Maas
Visit to the caves of Mount St. Peter   
Return by boat to Maastricht
Free time and dinner on your own

Day 9 (Wednesday)
Breakfast at hotel 
Class session
Depart for Brussels
Walking tour of Brussels
Lunch on your own
Departure for Ghent or Antwerp
Walking tour of Ghent or Antwerp
Dinner in Ghent or Antwerp

Day 10 (Thursday)
Breakfast at the hotel
Departure for Bruges
Boat ride through the canals of Bruges
Tour through the medieval city
Free time and lunch on your own
Leave for Leuven
Walking tour of Leuven
Dinner in Leuven
Depart for Maastricht

Day 11 (Friday)
Breakfast at the hotel
Class session
Visit schools in the Netherlands
Lunch and visit to the winery, Apostelhoeve     
Free time
Dinner on your own

Day 12 and 13 (Saturday and Sunday)
Days 12 and 13 are free days.  Participants can travel to other cities during these days.  Those who wish to stay in Maastricht can rest, shop, and explore the local area.

Participants need to remember that they cannot cancel their rooms at the hotel if they travel to other cities during the free days.

Breakfast is provided at the hotel on the free days

Class session
Departure for Cologne
Walking tour of Cologne
Lunch
Return to Maastricht
Farewell Dinner 

Day 15 (Tuesday)
Departure for airport
Departure for U.S.
